In short, the rich, spoiled brat did not like the fact the poor, unhygienic, weird kid was friends with the girl he wanted. As JKR has stated, James escalated the bullying because he fancied Lily and Snape was so close to her. They were picking on him before they were off the train. James and Sirius took an instant dislike to Snape because he wanted to be in Slytherin. Oh, don't worry, Sirius, I do look at how you treated people who were your lesser in society.Lupin, Snape and Kreacher immediately springing to mind.and it is not pretty at all. He rather hilariously said something about looking at how a man treated his lessers, as opposed to his equals. If he ever thought being on the "right" side of the war can hide that, he was wrong. Ironically, given how much we are told he despises his family, Sirius undoutbedly picked up his family trait of nastiness. It would be far beyond 11 year old Sirius to contemplate someone wanting to end up in Slytherin for a good reason. He wanted to escape Slytherin and being a child, at the time, he could not see past his own views or James'. He is entitled and privileged, even if he resents both of those things. Because Sirius has a lot of issues himself.
